Reflective Analytical Essay peer response guidelines

Page history last edited by Michael Kuhne 14 years, 9 months ago

To respond to each of your peer's drafts, complete the following process:

  • Read the rough draft.
  • Read the instructions below.
    • For each draft, respond to the writer's questions in a posting as appropriate.
    • In addtion, answer these two questions about each draft you're responding to:
      • 1.1 What do you like most about the draft and why (at least 50 words)?
      • 1.2 What confuses you or concerns you and why? How could the writer address this problem (at least 50 words)?
    • Finally, respond to these criteria-based questions:
      • 2.1 Mark the sentence that you think is the thesis. Why did you think this was the thesis? Is it nuanced and does it avoid over-simplification?  Are you able to predict the organization of the essay? Is it arguable and focused? Make specific suggestions for improving the thesis to match the essay (50 words)
      • 2.2 Choose one body paragraph that attempts to use the analytical paragraph structure outlined in the Analytical Paragraph Structure presentation. Try to divide this paragraph into the 4 part analytical paragraph structure. Explain to the writer which parts you can see and which parts you do not see. Offer suggestions about how to strengthen the use of evidence and explanation in this paragraph (100 words).

Please complete your peer responses on time so your colleagues will have time to insert your suggestions into their writing. You should complete your peer responses before the class when we discuss them. Late peer responses will suffer a severe grading penalty.

I will grade your peer responses holistically on a 0-10 point scale using the following criteria:

  • Length
  • Thoughtful and appropriate response to questions
  • Readability and clarity
